Provide
cost savings to your college due to
reduced staffing needs. |
|
|
|
| It
can’t just be hard work, the work that one
does has to be creative, and imaginative. And
that’s exactly the kind of work that goes on
here at my college. The structure that is
provided for us is so open, it’s open enough
that we can use our enthusiasm and our
motivation to try new things, to make changes
in systems that are already in place, and
there’s no… it’s not an oppressive
environment. It’s an environment that causes
us to find our true potential as students and
as human beings in the long run. |

Earn cash or credit for tuition,
room, board and expenses. |

|
| If
I even had the chance to go somewhere else,
for free, without the whole work program, and
everything. I think I would still choose to
come to the college of the Ozarks. Just
because of the fact that, in the end, after I
graduate from here I going to know that I did
this, that I’m part of it. When I come back
to this campus I’m part of what has been
done here on this campus. Yeah, I work fifteen
hours a week through the semester, you know,
to pay for my school. I ‘m doing this on my
own. |

Give Back: Become a contributing member of
society, the community and campus. |

|
|
| I
think the important thing is, like in a work
college, the idea of you working, In a way to
pay your tuition, tells you, it kind of tells
you, OK, I’m absorbing something from the
college, the college is giving me all this
learning. I think a way to pay that off, when
you’re working you feel that you’re paying
something off. You’re giving something back
to the college from which your are kind of
extracting so much from. So that’s a good
feeling.

Gain
occupational experience and training in the
world of work. |
|
|
|
| So
there really is that direct application of
what we’re doing on a day to day basis. And
I think that that’s kind what makes Sterling
unique, it’s what great about the work
program, is that we’re really getting to,
you know, take what we’re learning through
our classes or through the job itself and
apply it everyday. And, I think at the end of
this year for me, when I graduate, I’m going
to come away with such a more solid grasp on
what I learned. |

Improve
communication skills, interpersonal
relationship skills, and gain insight into
organizational behavior. |

|
| The
work colleges provide a very unique and
exciting alternative in higher education. At
work colleges academics and actual work
experience are partners in creating an
environment where people can maximize their
educational experience. |

Manage
your time: set goals and prioritize. |
|
|
|
| I’m
proud of the fact that I picked Blackburn
College. I have leadership opportunities that
I would never have found at any other college.
I am going to managing over four hundred
students next year along with one other
general manager. And that’s impressive.
That’s something that an interviewer,
whenever I try and get a job out in the real
world, is really going to be impressed with. |

Work
not pertaining to curriculum, for example the
greenhouse and the farm and the wood lot, more
of… the administration, the office, and the
kitchen work…it’s more of the sense of
community…to be part of where you’re at…
and to work as a whole.
The
work colleges
provide students with an increased
opportunity to be involved in the life of the
community. |
